Uncommoners is the title of a new exhibition and book by British and internationally renowned portrait photographer Steve Poole
Last year I received a phone call unlike any other, I answered a call from portrait photographer Steve Poole. Steve asked if he could take my photograph for his upcoming project ‘Uncommoners’.
I said yes.

Steve has taken the photograph of legends of our time. His work includes portraits of some incredible people including Sir David Attenborough, Nina Simone and Lord Montague of Beaulieu. For the last 15 years, Steve has lived in Lymington, Hampshire with his family.
Hampshire is my place of birth and it is the place I still call home. As an artist working in and around the New Forest, I am continually overwhelmed by its beauty. There is a never-ending source of inspiration from the landscape for me as a plein air painter.
As an artist who is passionate about the natural world and my work as a plein air painter, I was delighted to be included in this important project

Foreword of the new book ‘Uncommoners’ by Steve Poole
‘A study of the New Forest unlike any other: a series of environmental portraits that shed light on the vibrant, idiosyncratic human ecosystem at the heart of one of the UK’s most beloved National Parks.
From extraordinary, intimate pictures of New Forest commoners engaged in ancient agricultural practices to spectacular shots of athletes, workers, hobbyists and artists among the area’s diverse landscapes, UNCOMMONERS is an expansive homage to a place that leaves a mark on all those who visit it- and to the people who call it their home’.
“An experience in life I shall never forget and will treasure“

Spending the day with Steve Poole was an incredible experience
He is a master of his craft and dedicated to capturing the story of a person in a still image.
Being the subject of a photograph wasn’t easy for me. I spend a great deal of time working alone out in the environment. I am often away from the gaze of others, immersed in my work. This is how I create.
Steve has captured the essence of my life as a plein air artist and my love of the New Forest environment.
