The Royal Society of Marine Artists have announced their selection for the 2021 annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.
“I am absolutely delighted to be selected as an exhibiting artist by The Royal Society of Marine Artists with my work ‘Water Dance’. This work represents the busy harbour in Portsmouth which is shared late into the night by fisherman, commuters and visitors to the city.
The title of this work comes from the fleet of which PW1 is a part. However, it also represents the movement and interaction of the various shipping vessels in this busy area of the cities tidal waterways.“
About the RSMA: The Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) is widely recognised as the focal point for much of Britain’s finest contemporary marine art. Many of the country’s leading marine artists are elected members of the Society.

The Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition features works by elected members and non-members. Artists celebrate all aspects of the sea in a broad range of styles and media. As a non-member it is of course a great honour to be selected to exhibit alongside society members.
This work was a combination of plein air sketching and studio work, dictated in part by the attempt to capture low level evening light. The boat featured on the left side of this painting I have seen around the different harbours in Portsmouth. The chance to paint its late night arrival into the camber dock was an opportunity to explore the interesting light conditions.
It was quite a challenge to represent the movement of the boat, the water and the interaction of the artificial and natural lighting within the scene. The limited palette of colours helped to make the dancing reflections on the water a key visual feature of the work.
